Westward American Single Malt

The Westward American Single Malt is American Whiskey with a no age statement from the House Spirits Distillery based in Portland, Oregon. The brewing style of the Westward American Single Malt Whiskey is inspired by the spirit and the art of brewing and the traditions of the Pacific Northwest. The culture of the Oregon region is what also inspired the name.

History Westward American Single Malt Whiskey

After studying for a few years at the University of Washington, Seattle born Christian Krogstad decided to become a chef. While working hard at odd jobs in a restaurant, Christian heard about Portland’s growing brewing industry. He decided to learn more about brewing and the industry and shifted to Portland. He found a job at a couple of breweries in the region and from washing kegs to training as a brewer, Christian tried his hand at everything. Eventually, he went on to attend the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago, one of the oldest American schools that focused on brewing education and services.

After graduating in 1993, Christian returned to Oregon as a brewer and continued working in the industry for many years, even starting his own microbrewery along the way. After dabbling in multiple projects throughout the years, he formed the House Spirits Distillery in Corvallis in 2004. Fun fact – former NFL quarterback Joe Montana is one of the investors of the House Spirits Distillery.

Making Process of Westward American Single Malt Whiskey

The Westward American Single Malt uses two-row pale barley that is grown in the Pacific Northwest region. The 100% malted barley is milled and cooked before being fermented using American ale yeast or brewer’s yeast. The fermentation process is slow and is carried out at a low temperature.

The result of this fermentation is an American ale beer which is then double distilled in custom made low-reflux pot stills to maintain its exceptional characteristics. The distilled spirit is aged in full-sized, lightly toasted, medium char new American oak barrels. The aged whiskey is not chill filtered before bottling

Alcohol Percentage in Westward American Single Malt Whiskey

The Westward American Single Malt whiskey contains 45% ABV (90 US Proof), which is slightly higher than the standard permissible limit for single malt American whiskeys.
