The Balvenie distillery was built in 1892 by William Grant in Dufftown, Scotland. William Grant worked as a cattle herder and gradually moved on to a shoemaking apprenticeship. Soon after, he became a bookkeeper at the Mortlach distillery in Dufftown. It is here that William discovered his passion for the art of whisky making.
He spent 20 years studying and mastering the trade of whisky making and bought a field near the Balvenie castle, adding another distillery in the famous Speyside. The Balvenie distillery is one of the very few Speyside distilleries that grow their own barley.
