Dewars 25 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky

Dewar’s 25 Year Old is a Blended Scotch whisky released by Dewar’s in 2017, enhancing their core range and becoming its oldest member. It was released to replace Dewar’s Signature, previously believed to be Dewar’s most premium expression.

History of Dewar’s 25 Year Old Whisky

John Dewar Sr. established the Dewar’s brand in 1846, dealing in wines and spirits from Scotland and other regions. He was known to have carried out the practice of blending whiskies during the 1860s. He supplied these blends to restaurants and other establishments around Dewar’s store in High Street, Perth. John Dewar Sr. passed away in 1880.

The family business was left to John Sr.’s two sons, John Dewar Jr. and Thomas Dewar, who renamed the enterprise as John Dewar & Sons in 1886. Under the leadership of John Jr. and Thomas Dewar, the business thrived. The Aberfeldy Distillery was built in 1898 after a spike in demand left their previous supplier incapable of meeting demands.

The First World War and Prohibition brought a minor setback for the Dewar’s brand, which compelled them to join the Distillers Company Ltd. in 1925. The Dewar’s brand ceased to be a family-owned business over the years, changing hands from Guinness, which became Diageo and eventually being sold to Bacardi.

Currently, the Dewar’s brand is doing well under their parent company, having immediately undergone a rebrand after it was acquired in 1998. Dewar’s has historically been quite popular in the American markets through their value-for-money expression, the Dewar’s White Label and other expressions.

Industrialist Andrew Carnegie is believed to have sent a small barrel of Dewar’s whisky to United States President James Garfield’s inauguration at the White House. It is also believed that Carnegie repeated the same with President Benjamin Harrison in 1889.

Making Process of Dewar’s 25 Year Old Blended Scotch

The 25 Year Old Dewar’s has been created by Stephanie Macleod, the Master Blender at Dewar’s. She is currently one of the few women to be working as the Master Blender at a major whisky brand throughout the world.

This expression is a blend of many old malt and grain whiskies, which have been finished in special casks after blending. These casks, sourced from the Royal Brackla distillery, are freshly-emptied, before being filled with the Dewar’s 25 Year Old spirit.

Alcohol Percentage in Dewar’s 25 Year Old Blended Scotch

Dewar’s 25 Year Old blended Scotch whisky is bottled at 40% ABV, the standard permissible limit for Scotch whiskies.
