Chivas Regal 12 History

The Chivas Regal brand was formed in 1801 by the Chivas Brothers, James and John, who until the 1850s were involved with a grocery store that supplied provisions to the Royal Family of Britain itself.

Among one of their products was whisky, which the brothers found to be an exquisite and profitable business opportunity. In order to deliver a product that could embody the kind of luxury they intended to sell, Chivas Brothers began to mix and blend the aged whiskies at their disposal to create a blend that was just right.

Their first blended Scotch whisky was named the Royal Glen Dee in the 1890s, followed by another exclusive blend called the Royal Strathytan. Creating a truly legendary and luxurious whisky was at the heart of the Chivas Brothers’ plans, and thus, after much labor, love and meticulous experimentation, the Chivas Regal that we know and treasure today, was born.

The term ‘Regal’ was added to the Chivas brand name after the Chivas Brothers earned a Royal Warrant to supply goods to Queen Victoria herself.

The brand began exporting their product overseas, most notably, to the United States of America and quickly became one of the most popular brands in the country until Prohibition was enforced in the 1920s.
