History of Amrut Whisky
In 2004, Neelkanta Jagdale and his son Rakshit created Amrut as the truly premium Indian single malt whisky. Amrut Distilleries had been making malt whisky (from grain) for years and blending it with other whisky to create blends. But after the big liquor names entered the Indian market in 1990s and started importing blended Scotch, the Indian liquor preferences changed to lighter, lower-malt whiskies. So, Amrut Distilleries too, changed the formulas for their whiskies, and lowered the malt content. The malts kept collecting in Amrut’s distillery until Jagdale had the idea of bottling them as a single malt.
Amrut whisky got its first break in 2009 when Malt Maniacs, an independent group of whisky connoisseurs recognized the whisky as the Best Natural Cask Whisky in the category “Daily Drams”. During a blind product tasting in Glasgow’s popular whisky pubs the new product was well received by whisky enthusiasts. Some guests even mistook the whisky for a 15-year-old Scottish malt from the Highland or Speyside. Since then, the Amrut brand has become quite popular in India and abroad, having sold over 30,000 cases across a dozen countries.
Making Process of Amrut Whisky
For making Amrut single malt whisky, the barley is milled, mashed, fermented and then distilled carefully in small batches to preserve its unique aroma. The barley maturation takes place in oak barrels, previously used as Tennessee or Bourbon whisky barrels, in Bangalore’s tropical conditions. After maturation, the whisky is no-chill filtered to retain its unique nose and taste.
